Yesterday, May 19th, I had the opportunity to visit Group Health in Seattle which was started in 1947 by a few hundred ordinary citizens, people who worked in garages and consumer co-ops, members of labout unions, and idealistic physicians and nurses to transform the USA healthcare system. Group Health operates in a highly co-operative manner, informed by its members and cooperative values – all despite not being incorporated as a co-op. It serves 650,000 residents of NW Washington state. (adapted from Walt Crowley’s “To Serve the Greatest Number”)
What a privilege it was to meet and learn about Group Health from Jane McNamee. Thank you! Long may this exchange of ideas continue.
